What is an intensive course?

Holly Henwood driving test pass

Generally this will be a course of driving lessons taken in a relatively short period of time, usually 1-2 weeks. You will need to have both a provisional driving licence and have passed your driving theory test in order for an intensive course to work for you. Some companies offer a residential course  while others may also offer a semi-intensive course which is likely to run for around 2-4 weeks. All intensive courses will have a practical driving test booked in for the end of the course. Generally you can expect to spend 5-6 hours each day in car.

Is a pass guaranteed?

The simple answer is ‘no’! Nobody can guarantee a pass. Be wary of any company that offers. a ‘guaranteed pass’. All they are actually saying is that if you stay with them you will pass – eventually! How long that could be is anyone’s guess.

Would such a course work for me?

In our opinion, there need to be certain criteria in place before you consider an intensive course. If you are completely new to driving then the stress of learning a totally new set of skills in a very short space of time is likely to put you under a lot of pressure. Remember you are likely to be driving for around 5-6 hours each day – this is likely to be quite tiring for you. Some people however respond well to stress!

What is our view on an intensive course?

An intensive course works if you are a fast learner and can only take a limited time in which to learn – for example you have to take a week or two off work as you have no other time to learn. You do have to have passed a theory test and have a practical test booked. This is where the biggest sticking point comes – currently there is around a 5 month wait for a practical driving test date in the south west! This makes planning ahead for an intensive course really tricky. In addition we, as a driving school., are already very busy with our regular learners so we would be very unlikely to be able to be in a position to offer you an intensive course. However, if this is something you feel is right for you, we would be able to put you in touch with driving schools in the area who do offer intensive courses.
