DRIVING INSTRUCTORS

A driving instructor is the person who will deliver your driving lessons. Approved driving instructors are registered with the Driving and Vehicle Standards Agency (DVSA). They may work on their own or within a driving school.

A fully qualified approved driving instructor (ADI) has to display a green badge in the front window their car. He or she is licenced to to be paid to deliver driving lessons.

A trainee (provisional) driving instructor will display a pink badge in the window. They are licensed to deliver paid driving lessons but they are still being trained and have not passed the final qualifying test.

It is important that you make sure your instructor is qualified to give driving lessons for payment.

Most people think that all instructors are the same-this is a dangerous misunderstanding. It is a sad reflection on the driving school industry that many instructors take no further training after qualifying. They are, therefore, unaware of many of the modern approaches and techniques available. Client-centred learning is one such area. Many people are unaware of all of this and choose their instructor solely on price. This can be an expensive mistake which only becomes apparent when little progress is being made towards preparation for the practical driving test despite spending a lot of money. A driving instructor who has taken responsibility for his/her own development will have the confidence to offer a higher standard of tuition and the price of lessons will reflect this. Those who have not done so are the ones who are most likely to be offering cheaper lessons.
