DRIVING INSTRUCTOR TESTS
THE QUALIFYING PROCESS IS COMPRISED OF THREE SECTIONS
PART 1 – DEMONSTRATE YOU HAVE A GOOD KNOWLEDGE AND UNDERSTANDING OF THE THEORY OF DRIVING AND TEACHING IN A CAR.
PART 2 – DEMONSTRATE YOUR ABILITY TO DRIVE TO A HIGH STANDARD
PART 3 – DEMONSTRATE YOUR ABILITY TO TEACH SOMEONE TO DRIVE
As part of the training package you will get all the recommended DVSA study books, a hazard perception DVD and the Part 1 home study guide. This will give you a logical and structured approach to your Part 1 test.
The guide will suggest which parts of each of the recommended books you should read at any time – you won’t need to read through the whole of each book at any one time. You will then be directed to the relevant test in the guide for you to check on how well you have absorbed the information.
There are 30 tests in total. The Part 1 guide will provide you with all the information you need to pass the exam but also to provide a sound basis for you to build on in the rest of the course.
We will arrange regular sessions during your Part 1 studies so that your trainer can maintain contact with you and monitor your progress but also to ensure the material has a relevance to you. Many training organisations will leave the Part 1 studies completely to you and there will be no contact between you and your trainer unless you specifically ask for it.
One of the sessions will be specifically targeted to the ‘Hazard Perception’ part of the Part 1 test. This often proves to be the hardest part to pass so we will ensure you have the best technique possible to pass first time.
The course will begin with an assessment of your driving. This can feel quite daunting – you will probably have been driving for a number of years and now someone is watching to see how good it is! Don’t be worried about this, everyone has developed some ‘bad habits’ – we can still remember our trainer’s critiques of our driving! Yours won’t be perfect but we have seen it all before!
It is most likely there will be some areas of your driving that will require attention in order to get you to the high standard required to pass the Part 2 test. The assessment session will be used to provide you with a comprehensive report of your driving that will enable you to target the areas that require attention. This will enable you to give this a lot of attention whenever you are driving so that eventually they become the natural way in which you drive.
You will have two sessions early on in training programme focussing on the techniques required to become a good instructor, paying attention to the modern coaching methods that you should be incorporating into your work to allow you and your pupils to identify faults, understand the causes and effects of them and strategies to put them right. Many training programmes do not adequately prepare you for life as a qualified instructor as they still reflect the old system of assessment once you have qualified. We will ensure that you are given plenty of opportunity to develop modern methods of coaching rather than just instructing.
We are confident this will provide you with a good overview of what is to come in the course and will also begin to prepare you properly for life as a driving instructor.
In summary, this integrated approach to Part 1 will prepare you properly for the test but will also give you a great start to your Part 2 and 3 tasks.
By now you will be practising to get your driving to the standard required to pass the Part 2 test. You will be given a Part 2 workbook which will contain all the advice required to get all aspects of your driving to the required standard and also record your training sessions so we can monitor your progress.
The training for this part can either be in your car or your trainer’s. If you train in their car you will do the test in their car also. Your trainer will also be available on the day of your Part 2 test to accompany you on the test. This will enable them to see how you perform on the day. If you do decide to use your own car you will need to ensure your insurance covers you for this – many do not and you may need to pay an additional premium for this – their trainer’s car is already insured for Part 2 tests.
Your Part 2 test will last for approximately 60 minutes and you will need to demonstrate to the examiner that you are able to drive to a very high standard and be in the top 1% of drivers in the country.
It is always possible that you may not need all of the hours set aside for the Part 1 and 2 tests (although we would want to ensure that you are properly prepared for each test). If that proved to be the case we will add the hours on to your Part 3 training to give you even more preparation for this test.
This is the part that can be a real eye-opener if you are not prepared properly for it – even with good preparation this will be a steep learning curve as you begin to develop your ability to teach someone how to drive.
Regular 1-1 sessions will develop and accelerate your progress and these will be arranged to suit your pace of learning. There will be short bursts of learning mingled with time to reflect on how things have gone and what needs to be targeted in future. There will be 50 hours of structured tuition. You will get a Part 3 training manual and workbook. You will record your progress in the workbook. You will also get a briefings CD to help you with your introductions to each topic. The workbook will clearly lay out the Part 3 training programme.
Towards the end of the training you will go on to a trainee licence when you will be able to teach learners yourself and get paid for this. Your trainer will supervise some of these sessions to make sure you are then properly prepared for the Part 3 test which will involve you teaching a learner for about one hour with a senior examiner sitting in the back assessing you.
It is essential you do your research – there are significant differences between training providers and their attitude towards prospective trainees. We are confident the package we have developed will give you the best possible chance of qualifying and changing your lifestyle, enabling you to embark on a career where you are in charge of how and when you work.
You will probably have lots of questions after reading through this. You are very welcome to speak to either Christie or Kevin if you would like more details.
If you are interested in training with us or have further questions we would be delighted to invite you to meet us both. We can then show you the training package in detail, how we would build your diary should you join us, as well as give you details of what you might be able to expect as your income and expenditure. Also we would be able to tell you more about the ongoing support we would provide to help you develop as an instructor.
